He is Vice President for the Integration of Faith and
Learning, Dean of the Caskey School of Divinity, and William
Peterson Carter Sr. Research Professor of New Testament and
Greek at Louisiana College. Chuck grew up in the rolling hills of Northeast Mississippi as the son of a Baptist deacon and a committed Sunday School teacher. He spent his childhood days climbing trees, riding his trusted stick-horse Silver alongside his younger brother Tonto (Steve), and aggravating his older sister Kathy. Chuck’s parents were serious about raising their five kids to become responsible, hardworking adults. He got his first real job mowing the church and pastorium lawns when he was in the eighth grade. He developed a close relationship with his pastor, Brother Ben, who encouraged his sense of call to Gospel ministry and let him preach his first sermon at the age of thirteen. During his teens, Chuck worked as a farmhand, security guard, lifeguard, and milkman. He played the guitar and sang in a Country music band, eventually winning the Wrangler Star Search contest. A period of deep soul-searching led him to believe that his love for music was prompting him to compromise his commitment to Christ. In his late teens, he surrendered to the Lordship of Christ and began to wholeheartedly pursue his call to ministry. George Strait is still deeply relieved. He is a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of the University of Mississippi where he received the University’s highest awards in both of his majors (Classical Greek and Sociology). He received his Master of Divinity Degree with Honors and his Ph.D. in New Testament and Greek from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an experienced pastor, missionary, and theological educator. He served as Senior Pastor of three churches in North Mississippi and East Tennessee for over ten years. He served as a missionary of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Bucharest Romania from 1999 to 2002. He has served as a professor of New Testament and Greek at Clear Creek Baptist Bible College, the Bucharest Baptist Theological Seminary, the University of Bucharest, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and Louisiana College for sixteen years. He has also served as an adjunct professor and visiting professor respectively at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served on volunteer mission trips in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Russia, and Kazakhstan. He has published research in numerous international journals including New Testament Studies, Novum Testamentum, the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus, and the Bulletin for Biblical Research. He has defended the historical reliability of the Gospels in public and printed debates with John Dominic Crossan and Bart Ehrman. In additional to many Bible studies, articles in reference works, and reviews, he is the editor or author of six books including Buried Hope or Risen Savior: The Search for the Jesus Tomb; The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: A Comprehensive New Testament Introduction (with Andreas Kostenberger and Scott Kellum; The Sermon on the Mount: Restoring Christ's Message to the Modern Church; and The Illustrated Life of Paul (forthcoming). He is presently writing a Theology of the Gospel of Matthew (2012) and a commentary on the Greek text of Matthew (2014). He and his wife Julie have been married for twenty-two years and have three children, Rachael, Hannah, and Joshua. In addition to being a busy wife and mother, Julie works as the administrative assistant in the Human Behavior department at LC. Rachael and Hannah are students at LC, majoring in Social Work and Christian Studies respectively. Josh is a high school freshman and is preparing for the gospel ministry. |
